Outreach and
Leadership
While in undergraduate at Mississippi State University I was appointed the Psychology Department Undergraduate Representative for the first Inclusion, Diversity, Access, and Equity (IDEA) Committee. I work alongside her fellow representatives to ensure the department is an open, judgment-free space where students, faculty, and staff can have a direct line of communication with the committee and where students can feel represented and advocated for. Because of my aspirations to promote equity, inclusion, and access in my community, I have taken a role as an International Student Liaison. We aim to help new international students have a smooth transition from their countries and adjust to campus life. I was a liaison for ten international students and collaborated with staff from the Holmes Cultural Diversity Center (HCDC) to provide guidance on topics ranging from transportation, housing, and registration to questions about cultural grocery stores.
Secondly, I worked with HCDC to organize recreational events for students to create support networks. My experience as a founding member of the Recovery Ally Dawgs has broadened my horizons to a different dimension of inclusion by helping to advocate for those with substance use disorders and educating the Mississippi State community at large about substance use disorders on college campuses through the impartment of Recovery Ally Trainings where I expanded the recovery awareness of faculty and students on topics such as symptoms of substance use disorder, destigmatizing language and motivational interviewing.
